priority hiring

Starting 1 July 2024, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations is rolling out a new initiative to enhance support for apprentices, trainees, and their employers. This program, facilitated by Apprentice Connect Australia Providers, offers comprehensive assistance from the beginning of an apprenticeship through to its successful completion.

Introducing the Priority Hiring Incentive

What is it?

The Priority Hiring Incentive is designed to support employers who hire Australian Apprentices pursuing a qualification at Certificate level III or above.

  • Employers who commence a new or an Existing Worker Australian Apprentice in qualification and occupation listed on Australian Apprenticeships Priority List; including those identified as leading to a clean energy apprenticeship.
  • Apprenticeship with an occupational outcome listed on Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, including those identified as leading to a clean energy apprenticeship pathway.
  • Apprentice must be in-training with their employer on the Claim period due date.

Eligible employers can receive up to $5000 in the first year of an apprenticeship, distributed in two instalments:

  • Full-time Apprentices: $2000 at 6 months and $3000 at 12 months
  • Part-time Apprentices: $1000 at 6 months and $1500 at 12 months

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for the Priority Hiring Incentive, employers must:

  • Hire an apprentice training towards an occupation on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List.
  • Not currently receive the Priority Wage Subsidy or Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support for the same apprentice.

Employers should consult the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System Guidelines or their Apprentice Connect Australia Provider for detailed eligibility criteria.

Conclusion

These initiatives represent a significant investment in the future workforce of Australia, providing robust support for employers and ensuring apprentices receive the guidance and resources they need to succeed. For more detailed information, employers should refer to the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System Guidelines and consult their Apprentice Connect Australia Provider.
