KKTC Eat the Frog

Introduction

Embarking on a journey in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) can be both exciting and daunting. Whether you’re pursuing the CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or the CHC50125 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at KKTC (Kool Kids Training College), understanding how to navigate and excel in your training is crucial. This article provides essential tips and insights to help you succeed in your educational endeavours in this rewarding field.

1: Understanding Your Course Structure and Requirements

CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care: This entry-level qualification provides foundational skills in early childhood education, focusing on children’s health and safety, promoting holistic development, and supporting children in various care settings.

CHC50125 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care: A more advanced course, it covers comprehensive child care management and advanced care strategies, preparing students for supervisory roles in the education of young children.

Key Tip: Familiarise yourself with both course’s units of competency and the delivery model (online theory plus practical assessment) and if you are thinking of training with KKTC or another college, take a ‘deep dive’ into the support the college provides. HINT – Your KKTC Trainer and Assessor will be in your long day care centre every 3 weeks for on the job training and mentoring. Additionally KKTC offers a very personalised support service and we are proactive with extra support as needed. We are there when you need us!

2: Effective Study Habits

We say at KKTC ‘if it’s to be…it’s up to ME!’

The effectiveness of your study habits is really in your hands. Your Trainer and Assessor will encourage you to develop a study schedule that aligns with your work and non work hours. Of course the practical elements in the training are to be undertaken on the job, but you’ll need to do out of work study, reviewing the learning materials KKTC provides through a very user friendly Learning Management System (LMS). Engage regularly with the content to deepen understanding and retention.

It really is in your hands.

But know that your Trainer and Assessor will be with you ‘every step of the way.’

3: Practical Experience and Its Integration

As a Vocational Student you will be required to complete 160 hrs (Certificate III) or 280 hrs (Diploma) in a long day care setting as part of the training. These practical placements are integral to your learning. Maximise these opportunities by actively participating in the practical work as this is a ‘hands on’ learning experience.

The practical learning is also where the magic happens!

Reflect on your experiences with these practical projects and tasks that really will enhance your learning and professional growth. They set you up for a successful career as an educator.

4: Leveraging Resources and Support

KKTC offers a range of resources in an easy-to-navigate LMS which combined with supportive Trainers and Assessors means you have all you need to set you up for success. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your Trainers and Assessors for guidance as you work your way through your assessments. Our Trainers and Assessors can be contacted directly through the LMS messaging platform, or via SMS or email.

5: Managing Stress and Maintaining Well-being

Studying while possibly managing other life commitments can be stressful.

Implement stress management techniques such as mindfulness or regular physical activity into your routine.

Ensure you maintain a balanced lifestyle to support your mental and physical health.

And talk with your KKTC Trainer and Assessor – they understand the rigours of studying, working and living busy lives!

6: Preparing for Assessments

Approach your assessments with a plan.

And don’t procrastinate.

Prioritisation, time management and taking ‘bite size chunks’ out of your course work and not ‘kicking down the road’ deadlines and accountabilities is critically important.

Talking this week about setting priorities and time management, KKTC CEO and Managing Director Sam Hendry highlighted a book by Brian Tracy called Eat The Frog which sheds some good light on how to prioritise workload.

Sam said ”This book was a real eye opener for me. As a start, the name of the book is intriguing but basically the author says ‘If it’s your job to eat a frog’, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

Sam adds, “When you are doing your course work, believe me there will be times that you feel overwhelmed. This is just natural, but look at it strategically. Identify one important task or in this case the big questions or heavy reading or viewing of resources (i.e YouTube clips) you’ll need to do to complete the assessments and knock that off straight away. ‘Eat that frog’ first.”

Conclusion

Succeeding in Early Childhood Education and Care studies requires effective study habits, and a commitment to the practical elements in a long day care setting where you will need to illustrate your theoretical learning and competency in the workplace. By following these tips and making the most of the resources at KKTC, and most importantly – connecting with your Trainer and Assessor – you will not only excel academically but also prepare yourself for a fulfilling career in educating future generations.
