The NSW Government has unveiled a game-changing $20 million initiative to tackle the undersupply of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services across the state. The Building Early Learning Places Program, now open for funding applications, aims to create hundreds of additional ECEC places, particularly in regions where families are struggling to find quality care.
This strategic investment reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring every child in NSW, regardless of their location or background, has access to high-quality early education—a vital foundation for success in school and beyond.
Addressing the Need for More ECEC Places
For many families, securing a spot in an early childhood service is a daunting challenge, especially in areas with limited facilities. The Building Early Learning Places Program focuses on creating at least 300 new spaces per week for children aged zero to six. By accelerating the construction of new facilities and expanding existing ones, this program is set to provide much-needed relief to families in 31 targeted regions, including:
- Western and South-West Sydney
- Illawarra and South Coast
- Mid-North Coast
- Central Tablelands
- Central Western Plains
- Northern Tablelands
Notably, this program extends its support to not-for-profit community preschools, long daycare centres, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) service providers, ensuring that all communities, including vulnerable and underserved populations, benefit from the initiative.
How This Benefits ECEC Educators
This investment isn’t just about creating places for children; it’s also an opportunity to empower and grow the ECEC workforce. With more facilities being built or expanded, the demand for skilled ECEC educators will naturally increase. Here’s how the program, alongside other NSW Government initiatives, supports ECEC professionals:
Scholarships and Professional Development
More than $17 million has been allocated to scholarships and training to encourage more people to join the sector and enhance the skills of existing educators.
Business Capability Development
A $5 million fund supports early childhood services in building their business skills, ensuring providers can effectively manage the expansion and meet operational demands.
Flexible Initiatives for Family Needs
Innovative trials like weekend hours and flexible drop-off and pick-up times mean educators will work in dynamic, family-centric environments, fostering stronger connections with their communities.
Supporting Families and Strengthening Communities
This $20 million investment is part of a broader plan to make early education more accessible and affordable for NSW families. Key measures include:
- 100 New Public Preschools
Delivering 9,000 additional fee-free preschool places. - $430 Million in Preschool Fee Relief
Making quality care affordable for more families in 2024-25. - Flexible Operating Models
Services can trial new approaches, such as extended hours, which help working parents balance their commitments.
By addressing both infrastructure and workforce challenges, the NSW Government is paving the way for a stronger ECEC sector, ensuring children have the best start in life while supporting educators in their vital roles.
